It’s easy to look at a $100,000 hay crisis and think, What difference could my donation possibly make?

I understand that feeling. Frances may be our smallest goat, but standing in front of these towering stacks of hay, she’s a good reminder of how easy it is to feel small when you’re faced with something enormous.

When hay prices nearly doubled two months ago, we had a reserve hay fund set aside to help us absorb the increase while we figured out a long-term solution. We hoped it would buy us time. It did, but just two months later, that reserve is gone.

The hay crisis is still here. We’re still paying $160 for every bale, and we go through 28 bales every week. And we’re still terrified. Those numbers are overwhelming, until you break them down.

It costs about $25 to feed the entire sanctuary for one hour. Nearly 400 rescued animals, one hour. Suddenly, that impossible problem doesn’t feel quite so impossible anymore.

One person can feed everyone for an hour. Four people can feed everyone for a morning. Twenty-four people can feed everyone for an entire day. You can do this from anywhere in the world.

That’s how Broken Shovels has always survived, not because one person solved an impossible problem, but because thousands of compassionate people each did one small thing.
